Hello all,

Wondering is anyone has advice regarding transponders. Do you need one for every race? What's the best one to buy? Where's the best place to buy?

I was lucky & bought a MyLaps transponder from a retiring racer. I don't know about anything new on the market but when I was in the looking there were two types - battery (rechargeable) & hard-wired. I have the latter. When the ignition switch is 'on' the transponder is powered on. Makes for one less pre-race item to take car of. The battery type may be easier to install or to switch from car to car if you have a stable of race cars.

AMB/MyLaps is the default transponder for almost all systems...certainly all the ones where VRG races. Eric makes a good point. Unless you have multiple race cars and need to switch your transponder from car to car, get a hard wired model http://www.mylaps.com/en/products/car-direct-power-transponder/165. You will never have to worry about charging it, putting it in the car, etc. It goes on with the ignition and it has minimal current draw.

Thanks, guys. Got one! Any recommendations (or rules) on placement?

Interesting - I bought a new transponder and then found one on the car already. It's right behind the radiator in the engine compartment. Are there VRG rules about how far fore/aft the transponder sits? I know it has to have a clear shot downward. I'm going to send the one on the car back to the original owner and mount my new one.

No rules on location. Just as you said, it has to have a clear view of the ground as the timing loop is imbedded in the track.

Clearly the more forward you have it means that if you are racing neck-and-neck with someone at the finish line and your transponder is more forward than his....you win! :D

But good starters will overrule electronic timing if they see that the other guy actually got to the line first.

Ok - so there goes my idea of mounting it on a boom in front of the car...

Or better yet, on a rocket launcher that you trigger when entering the straight on the last lap ...

Actually, in case anyone is wondering, as far as I know T&S does not use transponders to determine finishing position in close finishes. They're still determined by visual observation.

It looks like Mylaps has a new version out that requires an annual subscription. Has anybody looked into these yet? I can't find out if it will still record at track if you do not have subscription renewed.

In other words, I don't really need all the personal online storage of lap times etc and access to them.

Is there going to be any changes as far as what works at our events?
