This thread is intended as a place to suggest features, capture bugs, and note user issues.
We can remove it once the forum has gotten its legs, or, keep it around for future requests/bugs.
I will subscribe to this thread so I can see new posts, and can follow up.

Bugs - should the forum do something unexpected, or you receive an error message, reply to this thread with a summary of what you were doing at that time. If possible, write down the error number, or copy & paste it into your reply. That will help to triage the issue.

Feature Requests - if you think the forum can be improved in some way functionally, let us know here. The forum software has a number of plug-ins for added functionality, which may not be on by default or can be added. If you frequent another forum and it has a feature you feel would benefit all of us, provide a description or link so we can review and consider for integration.

Issues - General usability issues - basically if you're having trouble and you're not sure why, reply to this thread and I can look into the problem. Maybe it's a bug, maybe it's just something not configured correctly - either way, we'll work to make it right.

Feature Request - Easier to read captcha:

I find the default Captcha (the anti-spam-bot image verification) to be extremely difficult to read, I've found a couple of alternatives that I think could make it easier - my preference is the first option, the picture based.

  • Picture-based captcha, click the picture that closest resembles the two verification images.:
    https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/mod/peoplesign_captcha_plugin/
    Demo:

  • Question & Answer verification:
Built-in to the forum, a question is presented, the user must answer the question correctly; the question-answer pairs should not be easily google-able, but easy to answer for the intended audience.
  • Bigger/Clearer random number captcha:
Also Built-in to forum, just an easier to read series of random characters that need to be entered, ex:

Bug - *maybe*

When trying to look at the cars for sale sub-forum, I got the following:

Code:
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

Too many connections [1040]

That could be on my end - but if others see this error, let me know here. Might be we need to tweak how the forum manages the database.

Interesting, I haven't seen any errors like this. However, I have noticed that the page is sometimes slow to load. When this happens, other apps that use mySQL on our webspace seem to have similar issues, which makes me wonder if it is the database server or the connection to it.

I like that plug-in a lot! Intuitive and easy to use. Much easier than the default captcha.

I'll take a look through the phpbb bugtracker - I see a few old references to how it connects to the db causing issues. Probably just a minor tweak!

I also like the picture based captcha (is that an acronym or just the Brooklyn pronunciation?). Having to make two selections seems to be more secure.

Forum pages also seem slow to load on my computer but not burdensomely so.

Mack,

captcha: "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart"

Though, the Brooklyn angle is something I hadn't considered...

I too have noticed some lag, particularly when previewing a reply. I'll enable the photo captcha to test on my local install, and also spend some time reviewing the database settings to see if I can speed things up a bit. Once I've verified things, I'll turn on the captcha and create a test user to make sure it works. I'll spend more time testing the db locally, so the forum isn't interrupted.

I agree. Preview seems to take the longest to load.

I'm going to turn on server-side compression, to see if that helps. Just making notes here as I do this, and those using the forum can see when something has changed. That way if it's better - we all rejoice. If it's worse, you can tell me and I can turn it off.

It probably would help if I wasn't also accessing the forum while on my company VPN which seems to slow down all of the internet...

Let me know if there is a marked improvement.

Captcha will be turned on tomorrow - when it is, I'll ask that a few people create test accounts to make sure it works, and it's satisfactory.
