On my to tow to the J500 from Long Island the frame of the 2001 Suburban cracked at the point of the trailer hitch being welded. It could have severed under towing. Too much tongue weight. Too many miles towing (80,000 plus).

At the track I found John McCauley, a tow truck driver and regular at Summit Point, who has a welding and repair shop in Chantilly, VA, (J and L Automitive) an hour south of Summit Point. He towed the trailer to his shop and began work on the Suburban, Monday morning. Rear bumper, fuel tank and leaf spring were removed, three inches of the frame were cut off and three feet of steel channel were put in the frame rails, bolted and welded, adding considerable strength. It took 16 hours. He did an excellent job and is a great resource, a fixer. If the frame had severed under towing the trailer I will let your imagination take you there - to a trailer at 70mph careening loose on the highway.

I would suggest that if any of you have a trailer, heavy and with considerable tongue weight, to inspect your frame at the point of the trailer hitch being welded. The 2500 Suburban frame is the same as the 1500. It probably is no stronger than a 2500 series pickup truck.
