The Race of Gentlemen (vintage hotrod racing on the beach)

Tue Nov 18, 2014 4:08 pm

I recently became aware of this event, held every October on the beach in Wildwood, NJ. Check out the photos here:

how totally cool is THAT??!! Can't wait to go watch next year. This has been going on for 3 years right under our noses, who knew? It's limited to Pre-war cars, built in the style of 50's hot rods, which I think are waaay cool. Oh, and motorcycles too -- tank-shift only!

Might take the fenders off my MG and see if I can sneak in next year ...

P.S. historical precedent: there were races on the beach in Cape May, NJ circa 1900 -1910 ... not sure how many years they ran there, but at the time the sand was very hard in East Cape May and it was thought to be the second best beach in the U.S. for racing (after Ormond Beach, FL). Would love to do more research on that, supposedly Henry Ford and Louis Chevrolet raced there.

Very cool!! I live in New Jersey and I didn’t know about this. I'll have to make a point of checking it out next year. :D

Thanks,
Rick
